Death

In both the stone pyramid and the ceramic skullcap I see that nobody just dies without being swaddled in one final ennoblement.  And the key part of this wrapping is the psychological aspect, the private yet socially coordinated experiences and emotions of the people who surround the deceased.

We might look at the effect of death as almost like that of a small particle of rock being dropped into a supersaturated solution of some mineral ion.  The particle acts as a seed to start a crystal rapidly growing.  In a society, consider the people out and about doing their business, like ions of dissolved minerals in solution.  They are supersaturated in that all exist in a state of potential upset, due to their recognition that the death of a friend or relative, as well as their own, could occur at any moment.  Suddenly an actual death plops into reality.  And immediately the ions crystallize around the dead person in organized rituals.  Each ritual is true to its culture, as crystals of calcium or silicon will be true to their form…”
