praise
for “The Caregiving Zone” ...
I had been asked to apply for a job as a Hospice chaplain, and was sitting
in the interview wondering when they would realize I had no real experience
and they had made a mistake. “Now we’ll do a case study”
was the signal for the end, or so I thought. “What would you do
if … ” asked the social worker. My response—blank.
Then I had a thought, which included telling the mother of the patient
she should get professional help, and probably medication. Even I knew
that was wrong. Finally (it felt like hours, it was just micro-seconds)
I thought,
“What would Peggy do?” I got the job.
Six years of hospice work later, I am still in awe of the inspiration
and vision knowing Peggy brings to my work and my life.
What will this book give you?
- A context for living, not just surviving, in the presence of the
transition we call death.
- A wide base of knowledge, and the resultant power to make informed
decisions.
- An opportunity to share the wisdom of one who has walked where—or
very near where—you are or will walk.
- A balance of practical, spiritual and emotional stories and wisdom
that will guide, encourage and sustain you if you let it.
The topic of this book is not easy, but it is essential. As one doctor
friend of mine is fond of saying: “Life is a sexually transmitted
condition that always proves fatal.” My response, thanks to knowing
Peggy, is “Death is a life-giving opportunity if you know how to
prepare for it.”
